Online safety is on the mind of every parent that
has children and a computer. It is in the news every
day, a child was in a chat room, or Blogging and
the child is abducted by an online predator. In the
majority of those instances, the parent was not taking
preventive measures to educate and protect their
child.
The reasons why may be because there is a certain level
of anonymity when this happens. What are the most common forms of online bullying?
There are many ways that this can occur, but the
most common places you will find children being bullied
is on a blog, chat room, emails, and message boards. Kids wear their feelings on their sleeves and when
an online bully identifies those feelings they will
more often than not, use them to humiliate their
victims.
What kind of things should parents discuss with
their children?
Parents talk to your children about online safety. If they have an understanding as to some of the things that happen online, they will at the very least be aware when it may happen.
Ask them questions on a regular basis about their web surfing habits. When you ask them about it, they will know that you are not going to give up on this and they will think twice about what and who they are interacting with.
Make sure they do not provide ANY personal identifiable information online. This is the single most important thing that EVERY parent needs to enforce. If they provide personal information of any kind, their online safety is in SERIOUS jeopardy. Online predators use personal information children post online to manipulate the child and gain confidence.
As adults we remember that a bully would hang out
at the school yard waiting to terrorize someone for
one reason or another. Well, the school yard is now
online and it is everywhere. It is called cyber bullying
and it is out of control. If your child is a victim
of this, you need to know ASAP.
Blogging is a new and easy
way to create a personal web site for the world to
see. It does not require
much technical knowledge to have a blog and this
could be one of the reasons that children have taken
a liking to it. A blog can be very similar to a diary
or a daily journal. Children are posting very personal
things on their blog and if the wrong person reads
it, it could result in disastrous results. Blogs
are hosted free of charge on websites like myspace.com,
or xanga.com.
They may be very good social networking
sites, but with regards to online safety, they are
seriously lacking. The fact is that with almost any
Blogging community any child and any adult may be
a member and interact with everyone with little to
no safeguards in place. This can result in a 42 year
old man sharing intimate and personal opinions with
a 14 year old girl on a regular basis. We would not
allow this in the real world and we should NEVER
allow it to happen online.
That is a lot to keep up with, what can I do to
make it easier on me?
You should discuss the above mentioned with all
of your children REGARDLESS of their age, and let
them know you will be there for them no matter what
the circumstances are. Another thing that you may
want to consider is installing monitoring software
